Ruakaka Beach Fishing Map
A good beach suitable for both Bottom Longlines and any of the Dropper Rigs.

The main shipping channel servicing Marsden Point Oil Refinery and Whangarei Harbour is directly out from the beach and is very busy.

In the summer months there are lots of pleasure craft and yachts to contend with as well.

Fishing in the evenings and night is much better here.

Watch for crab pot floats which can cause snagging.

There is intermittent foul around the 1500 metre mark, found out more from Robbie Cullen here

Catch

Snapper and gurnard are common winter fish. John dory can be caught on whole small kahawai, baby snapper or moving dead baits. John Dory are often hooked during setting and retrieving due to the baits moving. Floating baits using floating bead traces are excellent for targeting john dory as the bait is presented in a natural way.

A real hot spot in summer for good sized snapper and kingfish.

Mako sharks of 30-50kg have been caught on kite rigs in the past.
