Kite Rigs and Boat Longlines Kite Parts and Flounder Lights
Red Beach from Craig Dooley
We went out on Monday for our first attempt at kitefishing. The southwest winds were perfect for Red Beach.

We have a Night Hawk Dropper Rig set up and put out 11 traces baited with squid.

The kite went straight out to about 800m and we left it to fish for about 30 minutes.

The gear was set around 7pm, which was over the turn of the top of the tide.

When we brought it back in most of the bait had gone and we had one nice snapper.

As this was our first catch using the kite we were pretty happy. Can't wait for the next catch.

Area Report Port Waikato - Aaron Buxton

ED : We get few fishing reports from Port Waikato even though the place is renown for huge kite caught snapper.

Thanks to Aaron for the vital local knowledge which will greatly assist anyone considering fishing there.

We took the campervan Port Waikato on a Friday night in late November, the wind was perfect Saturday morning albeit gusty.

We travelled aproximately three quarters of the way up the beach and put the first twenty hook set out to about 1500 metres and left it to fish for half an hour.

Above : The good sized gurnard

Pulled it in and got four very large gurnard, two medium sized kahawai, one small hammerhead, a small bronze whaler and a fairly large mako.

Saturday afternoon we travelled back down the beach and fished aproximately 600 metres up from the bottom of the beach.

Photo Above : Sharks were a bit of a problem and we lost a few traces.

We put the kite out to aproximately a kilometre and left it set for twenty minutes.

It took nearly and hour to pull it in!

Finally got the gear back in and had lost eight hooks, only twelve left.

Two snapper heads, and one fairly large bronze whaler at the very last hook.

Sunday morning, wind was blowing onshore so jumped on quad bike with my mate Vic and headed for the Heads where the wind was blowing offshore with a slight tack.

Running ten hooks, pulled back in five reasonable kahawai. All in all, this is not a bad beach to fish.

The total distance from bottom of beach by the surf club to the heads is 6.13 kms.

This beach has huge potential but you must be very very careful of the very shifty and soft sand as the quad bike we have is 400 cc permanent 4x4 with diff locks and cross locks and at times we even this got stuck!

Photo Above and Right : As you travel towards the heads along the beach, be very aware of dead trees, soft sand, debris and wrecks of boats on the beach.

We watched two 4x4s get bogged beyond belief at the top end of the beach so be very aware of this.

It would be wise to travel with a buddy in two cars. There is a heap of good kahawai and snapper to be caught off the rocks.

Inflatable Kites - Kite Collapsing?

Some fishers have reported problems with our large inflatable kites collapsing in gusts.

If this is happening to you, we now have a solution. If you send your kite in or drop it into the shop we will do the alteration for free.

If you mail it to us, please include $10.00 to cover the postage and packing of the return parcel.

The fix is an alteration that fits spars into the bladder pockets so when we return the kite the parcel has to be sent by courier.

For details ring Rob at the Shop Ph 634-5005
