There is a snag directly in front of the gate at the southern end of the beach, be sure to walk at least 500 metres or more up or down the beach in order to avoid it.

Pakiri can be a challenging beach to fish due to its high cliffs. Kitefishers can experience problems launching their kites with wind shadows and down drafts.

A strange wind phenomena also occurs from this beach at around 300 metres offshore.

This is where the spiralling winds from the cliffs meet the water and can sometimes cause the gear to temporarily stall in the surf. Read how to prevent damage to your kites and keep your kites afloat here

Pakiri Beach Catches

A real hot spot for large snapper from September through to May.

Gurnard and kahawai are frequently caught during the winter months with the occasional john dory taken on lures. Huge stingrays and mako sharks have also been landed on Pakiri.

Fresh mullet, just caught kahawai or squid are reliable baits here for targeting general species.

Larger snapper are frequently caught when using paddle crabs for bait. Use only small paddle crabs. Remove the pinchers and peel off the back before hooking them. Larger crabs do not mean larger snapper but will result in catches of stingrays to unbelievable proportions.

Targeting larger fish should only be attempted by Dropper Rig fishers using the long floating back trace.
